Preschool Group Activities

Preschool group activities can be simple and fun:

  • Have conversations while you go about your day
  • Sing fun songs to help memorize rhymes
  • Read daily and look through a variety of books
  • Tell a fun story from your life or make one up
  • Provided opportunities to experiment with writing




Balloon Bopping

SUPPLIES:

  • Balloons


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Have the children try to keep a balloon in the air as long as they can.
  2. As they bop, count or say the alphabet.
  3. See how many bops they can do.

Box Tower Knockdown

SUPPLIES:

  • Boxes
  • Stuffed animal


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Stack boxes into a tower.
  2. Take turns trying to knock the tower down by throwing a stuffed animal.




Follow the Leader

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Chose a leader and the rest of the children line up.
  2. The children in the line follow whatever the leader does.
  3. Have the children take turns being the leader.

Mixed up Maze

SUPPLIES:

  • Yarn


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Make a maze on the floor using yarn.
  2. Have the children walk along the yarn to find the end.




Quack Like a Duck

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Chose a child to be the leader and then pretend to be ducks.
  2. When the leader says, "duck," then all the children duck down.
  3. When the leader starts quacking again, all the children get up.

Silly Statues

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Explain what a statue is and show pictures of some famous statues.
  2. Chose a leader to be a statue.
  3. All the children turn into that statue and try to hold it for ten seconds.
  4. Chose another leader.




Tightrope Walking

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Tape a line on the floor.
  2. Have the children walk across the line and try not to fall off.
  3. Have them try walking backwards, hopping on one foot or crawling.

Toss Your Toys

SUPPLIES:

  • Stuffed animals
  • Blanket


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Have each child grab part of the blanket and place the stuffed animal in the middle.
  2. Count to three and have everyone toss the stuffed animal high in the air, then try to catch it.
  3. Have the children walk across the line and try not to fall off.




Autumn Leaves are Falling Down

SONG: Sing to the tune of London Bridge
Autumn leaves are falling down
Falling down, falling down
Autumn leaves are falling down, on the ground

Take a rake and pile them up
Pile them up, pile them up
Take a rake and pile them up, on the ground

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Have two children hold hands forming a bridge.
  2. The other children walk under the bridge as they sing the first verse.
  3. When they sing the end, the two children trap the one walking through.
  4. They sing the next verse, while swaying their prisoner back and forth, like they're raking leaves.

London Bridge is Falling Down

SONG:
London Bridge is falling down
falling down, falling down
London Bridge is falling down, my fair lady

Take the key and lock her up
lock her up, lock her up
Take the key and lock her up, my fair lady

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Have two children hold hands forming a bridge.
  2. The other children walk under the bridge as they sing the first verse.
  3. When they get to the end, the two children trap the one walking through.
  4. They sing the next verse, while swaying their prisoner back and forth.




Down by the Banks

SONG:
Down by the banks of the hanky panky
Where the bullfrogs jump from bank to banky
Saying eep ipe ope opp
One jumps in and goes kerplop!

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Have the children stand in a circle
  2. While singing, have them pass a beach ball around
  3. When they sing the last word, kerplop, have the child holding the ball bounce it
  4. The child that catches it gets start the next round

Ring Around the Rosie

SONG:
Ring around the rosie
A pocket full of posies
Ashes! Ashes! We all fall down!
INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Have the children stand in a circle.
  2. While singing, have them spin in a circle.




Busy Bees Relay Race

SUPPLIES:

  • Two Buckets
  • Spoons
  • Cotton Balls


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Put a picture of flowers on a bucket and fill it with cotton balls. Place it on one side of the room.
  2. Place a bucket with a picture of a beehive on the other side of the room.
  3. Give each child a spoon and tell them they get to pretend to be bees and collect the pollen from the flower bucket and take it to the beehive bucket.
  4. Have them place a cotton ball on their spoon and take it over to the beehive bucket.
  5. See how many they can carry in one minute.

Duck Duck Goose

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Have the children sit in a circle.
  2. One child walks around the circle and taps each child on the head calling them duck or goose.
  3. When he calls someone a goose, that child runs after him and tries to touch him before he sits down in the open space.
  4. If he gets caught, he’s still the goose. If he sits down first, the chosen person is the goose.
  5. Get Creative and try toad toad frog, fairy fairy princess, pickle pickle pizza, or have the children come up with a new one.




Hot Potato


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Have the children sit in a circle.
  2. Explain that they are pretending the bean bag is a hot potato, too hot to hold.
  3. When the music starts they pass the bag around the circle.
  4. When the music stops the child holding the potato yells, "hot potato!"

Limbo

SUPPLIES:

  • Pole
  • Music


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Turn on some fun music and line the children up.
  2. Hold a pole horizontally and have each child walk under it, then lower the pole.
  3. See how low they can go.




Mother May I

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Choose a child to be a mother and have the rest of the children stand in a line.
  2. Each child takes a turn choosing a step, then asking, “Mother may I take __________ steps?”.
  3. The mother then says, “No, you may not,” or “Yes, you may take __________ steps,” and chooses how many they take.
  4. All the children do the step forward.
  5. The first person to reach the mother wins and becomes the next mother.
  6. Get creative and try doing bunny hops, monkey steps, dinosaur steps or ballerina leaps. You could also change mother to teacher, princess, king, or Santa.

Mr. Freeze


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Choose a child to be Mr. Freeze.
  2. The other children run around until Mr. Freeze says, “Freeze.”
  3. They stay frozen until he says, “Unfreeze."
  4. You can also have Mr. Freeze choose an animal everyone will act like.




Popsicle Licking Race

SUPPLIES:

  • Popsicles


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Give each child a popsicle.
  2. See how fast they can get to the stick by licking.

Relay Racers

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. There are countless ways you can have a relay race.
  2. You can try two-legged races, or have the children touch a wall and run back.
  3. Another idea, have a bucket full of balls on one side and an empty bucket on the other.
  4. Have the children split into two lines and take turns running the balls to the empty bucket.
  5. The first to fill up their bucket wins.




Simon Says

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. One child is Simon and stands in front.
  2. Simon then asks the other children to do whatever he wants.
  3. The children only do it when he says, “Simon says,” before the action.
  4. Get creative and change Simon to the child’s name, favorite animal or cartoon character.

Water Balloon Towel Toss

SUPPLIES:

  • Water balloons
  • Towels


INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Pair the children together and give each pair a towel.
  2. Place a water balloon in their towel and have them toss the balloon to another pair.
  3. Have them try to catch the balloon in their towel.
